Obituary:
Grey F. Cates, 77, of Boise, died Monday, March 16, 1987, at home of natural causes.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 18, at Kohlerlawn Cemetary, Nampa.
Pastor A L Heitzmann of the Eagle Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate, under
direction of the Alsip Funeral Chapel, Nampa. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetary.
Mr. Cates was born April 15, 1909, in Davis County, Ind., a son of Edward and Viola
Cates. At a young age, he moved to Bainville, Mont. The family later moved to Fariview,
Mont., where he was reared and educated. Following his schooling he owned and operated
his own barbershop in Tuttle, Mont. He married Naomi E Boles on Sept 16, 1930. Mr. Cates
began working in construction, and was a heavy equipment operator on several dams in
Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Oregon. He retired from construction, and they moved to
Boise in 1971. He was a ditchrider in Garden City for several years. He later retired,
and they had since resided in Boise. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in
1980.
He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union.
Survivors include his wife of Boise; two sons, Lawrence G Cates of Estacada, Ore., and
Clarence D. Cates of Boise; two daughters, Frances N Brown of Boise and Luella J Miller
of Eagle; several brothers and sisters; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren ; and
several nieces and nephews. His parents died earlier, and a son, Robert Fred Cates, died
in 1957.
