James Kelly, Ex-Police Lieutenant

James H. Kelly, 86, retired Jersey City police lieutenant, died yesterday at his home, 567 Montgomery St., Jersey City.

Mr. Kelly, who was appointed to the police force April 13, 1897, thereby acquiring the nickname "Jinx," served briefly as a captain, later being demoted to the rank of lieutenant prior to the advent of Civil Service in 1913.

He was assigned to the Bureau of Patrol and later to desk duty before retiring March 1, 1932. He was a lifelong resident of Jersey City.

Lt. Kelly was a member of the Police Mutual Aid Society and the Jersey City Lodge of Elks.

The funeral will be held Friday morning from the McDonald Funeral Home, 280 Baldwin Ave., Jersey City. A mass of requiem will be offered at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.
