After a long struggle to live with illness and to find the joy of each new day, Doreen Oliver of Saratoga passed peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday morning, 23 July 2008.

Born in England in 1920 to George and Gertrude Caton, she was given the name Doreen Georgina Gertrude Hilda Caton. During World War II Doreen met Robert Earl Oliver, then an officer in the American Merchant Marine, born and raised in Saratoga, and they were wed in England during January 1947.

She came to the United States in the following year and together they built their new home in Saratoga. She was proud of her English heritage and often waved the Union Jack to show that pride. She was equally proud of her new home as she became an American citizen.

Doreen was foremost a wife, a mother, and a homemaker. She dedicated herself to the upbringing of her sons, engaging and assisting them in school and church, in scouting and community volunteer efforts. Her hand was always quietly and modestly extended to her community, and she worked towards its betterment in the Foothill Club, the Federated Church, the Rebekah Lodge, the Daughters of the British Empire, Sigma Alpha, and through her own private personal efforts and generosity.

She will be fondly remembered by many as the witch on Saratoga Vista Avenue at Halloween and as a genial hostess in the very early days of the Plumed Horse.

Doreen is survived by her loving son Mark Oliver with his wife Barbara and children Steven and Kendra, and son Robin with his wife Jenny and daughter Nicole. Doreen's older brother Eric and his wife Edna and their family and friends in England share in this sad moment. She will be missed by all whom she has touched.

Doreen's family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life at the Saratoga Retirement Community on Saturday, 23 August, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please make generous contributions in her name to the Foothill Club Historic Landmark Foundation (http://www.foothillclub.org/FoundationReport.pdf ) and to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (http://www.psp.org/)
