Ryan Alexander Harmon - Family mourns Iraq vet shot to death in Atlanta: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Cox Washington Bureau (DC) - Friday, April 14, 2006
Deceased Name: Ryan Alexander Harmon - Family mourns Iraq vet shot to death in Atlanta
While Atlanta police are searching for a gunman and motive in the shooting death of an Iraq war veteran, his relatives are wondering how the DeKalb man could survive a dangerous tour of duty overseas but lose his life at home.
Ryan Alexander Harmon, 24, of Lithonia, was shot twice in the back early Thursday while driving his silver Chevrolet Tahoe in downtown Atlanta.
Injured in a barrage of bullets, Harmon crashed his sport utility vehicle into a MARTA support rail on Spring Street near I-20, police said. He died at the scene - 13 months after returning from Iraq.
Steve Berry, his stepfather, said they learned of his death in the middle of the night - a dreaded phone call that never came while he was in Iraq serving in the Army.
"It's very painful to us, " Berry said. "To get a call from DeKalb County police that he's been shot, [that's] kind of hard to swallow."
Authorities found the SUV riddled with bullet holes, including its tailpipe. The bullets that hit Harmon came through the rear and driver's seats, police said.
Family members say Ryan Harmon may have been in the area to visit a woman whom he met a few days earlier.
Police don't have any suspects in the shooting.
Ryan Harmon, a divorcee with no children, leaves behind parents and four siblings. He lived with Steve and Phyllis Berry, his mother and stepfather.
Charles Harmon, his father, described him as a good person who never got in trouble growing up. The Lithonia High School graduate liked music and joking around.
"He was an all around good kid," said Harmon. "I'm going to miss him."
Relatives said Ryan Harmon joined the Army just before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. The soldier eventually went to Iraq, where he served for 14 months as part of the 4th Infantry Division, Berry said.
He returned from overseas in March 2005.
Harmon got out of the Army in September and went to work for Alutiiq, a private contractor that provides security at the entry gates to Fort McPherson in East Point and Fort Gillem in Conley, according to Ron Morton, a spokesman for Fort McPherson.
Morton said Harmon worked primarily at Fort Gillem.
Charles Harmon said his son was good at anything he tried. The former soldier's dreams included becoming a used-car businessman, he said.
"He just had big plans after coming from Iraq," said Harmon, who lives in East Point. "He was on his journey in life to do great things."
