Herbert or Herbie as he was called as a child, grew up in Syracuse, Oswego, Stella Niagara and Vestal, New York. He joined the Navy in 1952, serving 20 years as a hospital corpsman. In 1955 he married in Somerville, Massachusetts. Barney traveled the world with the Navy living in Pensacola, Florida; Camp Lajuene, North Carolina; Portsmouth and Virgina Beach Virginia; West Warwick and North Kingstown, Rhode Island; Kifisia, Greece, and Vista, California before retiring to North Kingstown, Rhode Island. He was a graduate of Johnson & Wales University in 1980 receiving a B.A. in Business Administration.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons; William M. and his wife Pamela of Warwick, R.I., Denis R. of North Kingstown, R.I., his granddaughter Kathleen of Warwick, R.I., his brother, J.B. Barnes and his wife Susan of Brackney, Pennsylvania, and his dog Sophie. Mr. Barnes was predeceased by his son Richard E. Barnes.
His granddaughter Katy called him Bepa.
