Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 24th from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. with a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Fr. Stephen Rocker, pastor of St. James Catholic Church officiating and burial in New St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur.
Rita was born September 16, 1936 in Ogdensburg, the daughter of William and Genevieve Kio Papineau.
She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1955.
Rita married Durwood Absalon on May 24, 1958 at St. James Catholic Church.
Rita worked as a switchboard operator for a number of years and was a waitress at Lynde's Dairy and Penguin Lanes in Gouverneur.
She enjoyed playing golf, bowling, flowers, camping at Hyde Lake, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rita was a member of Emerald Greens golf course and St. James Catholic Church.
Rita is survived by her husband, Durwood; a daughter, Marie and Jim Moore of Spragueville; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jenny Young of Pope Mills, Anita Hayes of Gouverneur; several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by an infant daughter Desiree~ Absalon, her parents, brothers Dick and Bill Papineau, sisters Lucille Richardson and June Shattuck.
