*Note there is another memorial for Melvin linked to Ellen which indicates burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Saginaw, Saginaw County (Memorial# 118312872). Turns out that is correct, however, there's a story behind that. See bottom for full info but I'd just like to state here that his body was held at Springport Cemetery for a month and a half before his body was released to his stepson to be buried in Roselawn. I have this directly from the cemetery personnel.

Melvin Sherman Edwards was the son of William John Edwards (1898-1964) and Gladys Louella LINCOLN (1900-1935). He was born on November 18, 1922 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan and died on January 1, 1978 in Oscoda, Iosco County, Michigan.

Melvin had three brothers who all died as infants:

Lloyd Llewenlyn Edwards (1919-1919), Evan Christopher Edwards (1921-1921) and Ivan William Edwards (1921-1921). Evan and Ivan were twins; Evan died on the same day as he was born and his twin, Ivan, lived just one day. Little Lloyd died at just 26 days old.

Melvin's mother (my grandmother) divorced her first husband William Edwards and remarried to my grandfather, William Beebe. Melvin's parents divorced on April 10, 1923 when Melvin was just five months old. His mother, Gladys, remarried to William Beebe on April 11, 1923. Gladys and William Beebe had five children (so half siblings of Uncle Melvin):

Frederick Ellsworth (1924-2008), Uldene Laurel (1926-2013), Junia Ellabelle (1927-2012), Goldie Louise (1929-1978) and Virgin Ione (1932-2016).

Melvin initially lived with his mother and stepfather and the family is found on the 1930 census living in Thetford Township, Genesee County, Michigan. However, his mother Gladys died on December 5, 1935 and Melvin elected to go live with his biological father William Edwards. Melvin and his father are found on the 1940 census living in Whitefish Point in Chippewa County, Michigan (the Upper Peninsula). Also living in the household were Melvin's grandfather Christopher Evans and Melvin's stepmother Mary.

On July 4, 1942, Melvin married Ellen JENKINS (1902-1973) in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan. Melvin and Ellen never had any children.

Melvin was still residing in Saginaw in 1956 and 1958 per City Directories.

After Ellen's death in 1973, Melvin remarried in about 1975 to Carol Hoeppner. They had a son Michael born about 1975.

Melvin continued living in the Saginaw area until close to the time of his death but prior to his death on January 1, 1978, they had moved to Greenbush, Alcona County, Michigan.

Melvin's obituary appeared in The Saginaw News on January 4, 1978, page D11, which indicated burial in Springport Cemetery.

I was just a teenager when Melvin died so I don't remember a whole lot about him and Ellen and for some reason, my mom never talked about him much. I do remember going out to their house in Saginaw and my sister, brother and I playing pool on the pool table in their basement. I don't think we went out there very much and I'm not sure why. I mostly knew my mom's other siblings, but I know my mom loved her brother, Melvin. I also remember meeting his 2nd wife and their son but haven't seen them in years.

From what I remember, Melvin was a very nice man and I wish we had known him better.

Melvin's 2nd wife Carol wasn't sure where she wanted to bury Melvin so she had his body 'held' at Springport Cemetery. On January 10, 1978, Carol contacted Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Saginaw, Michigan to tell them she wanted to have her husband buried in another cemetery (Springport) and she wanted to sell his gravesite but she didn't. On February 20 of 1978, Carol gave permission for Melvin's stepson Carl, Roselawn Memorial and Snow Funeral Home to inter Melvin in Roselawn. Permission was given on Snow Funeral Home letterhead and notarized.

For some reason, burial was still delayed until March 30, 1978 (in Lot #109C, grave 3). So for 3 months Melvin remained at Springport in 'storage' until his burial in Roselawn. I can't even imagine that.

On May 25, 2017, I confirmed Melvin's burial in Roselawn with them so he's definitely buried there.

I am leaving this memorial in Springport as a reference for now as that is where Melvin first rested.
