Paul was born in Ecorse, MI, and was preceded in death by his parents Bella and Al Gatien. Paul had four sisters, Irene Love, Mary Ellen Wilson, the late Margaret Priemer, and the late Rita Gearhart. He was married for 38 years to the late Sharon Gatien and had four children, Renee Sevy-Hasterok (Rod Hasterok), Eileen Fazio (Frank Fazio), Ross Gatien (Amy Sigman), and Michael Gatien (Stefanie Gatien).

He was survived by his wife of 8 years, Joyce Gatien and step-children, Nicole Price (John Draskovich) and Lance Price (Jen Price). He had 16 grandchildren, Julia, Alex and Shane Sevy, Lauren and Troy Hasterok, Krysta, Karie and Leo Fazio, Rylee, Collin and Jonah Gatien, Ethan and Christian Gatien, Austin Gentry, Avery Draskovich, and Mason Price.

He was a Master Electrician and ran a successful electric and security alarms business until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed golf, travel, and antique cars, but his first love was aviation. He was a private pilot for over 25 years, and owned a 4-seater Cessna. His love of the sky began even before, when he proudly served in the Army's 101st Airborne as a paratrooper. He was a World War II buff and collected World War II memorabilia.
