GREENSBORO - Mr. Richard Douglas Cockman, Sr., 77, of Greensboro died on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 after a long illness.


A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 1, at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Pastor Terry Welborn of Brandt Oaks Baptist Church will be officiating.


Mr. Cockman was born June 7, 1932 in Greensboro, a son of the late I.D. Cockman, Jr. and Maggie Herrin Cockman. He grew in the McAdoo Heights area of Greensboro and later served in the United States Coast Guard. He was a truck driver by trade and worked in that industry for the majority of his adult life until his retirement in the early 1990s. Mr. Cockman and his family would move to Farmville, Va. in the 1960s before returning to Greensboro in 1979 where he lived for the remainder of his life. Mr. Cockman was a Master Mason for over 40 years and was a Past Master of his home lodge, Burke Lodge # 147 A.F & A.M in Burkeville, Va.


Mr. Cockman was proceeded in death by his wife, Marjorie Stevenson Cockman and brother, Barry Cockman.


Mr. Cockman is survived by sons, Richard Steven Cockman and close family friend Chris Pehlke of Greensboro, Richard Douglas Cockman, Jr. and wife Diane of Graham and Jeffrey Douglas Cockman of Greensboro; daughters, Cynthia Tilden and husband Barry of Paducah, Ky., Lori Ritter and husband Jim of Butler, Pa. and Pam Travis and husband Keith of Canton, Ga.; sisters, Sylvia Lusky and husband Frank of Greensboro and Janet Apple of Wilson; brother, Dewey Cockman and wife Billie of Skyline; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Ellen Coleman of Greensboro served as a caregiver and a friend of the family.


The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. Friday at the Hanes-Lineberry, North Elm Chapel.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gateway Education Center, 3205 East Wendover Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405 or the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, c/o Chris Richardson, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
