Daniel was born on the banks of the French Broad River in Cocke County Tennessee. He was the third child of Jesse Hughes and Dorcas Johnson. They had moved to the area from South Carolina and about the time Daniel was five years old his family moved to Tuscaloosa County. AL. Where he resided as a farmer until his early and untimely death from a horse racing accident.

"My Grandfather Hughes (Daniel Hughes) went to Tuscaloosa one day with Mr. Chestnut on horse back, 13 miles distance. When they returned within a mile of home, they decided to race their horses, Grandfather won the race twice. Mr. Chestnut insisted they race again. Grandfather said no, my horse is faster than yours, my wife is not well, I want to go home; but was over persuaded, and raced the third time. Grandfather's horse left the road, slammed him against a tree, and he was killed instantly."
