JOHANN Georg Birnbaum was born November 12, 1820 in the village of Kandel in the kingdom of Bayern-Pfalz (now the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany), in the village of Kandel. He is the son of Johann GEORG Birnbaum and Anna Elisabet Rau.

On June 18, 1846 in Kandel, he married Anna BARBARA Hanss. Barbara was born on November 9, 1820 (according to their marriage record). Unfortunately, the birth/baptism records from the Kandel Evangelical parish from mid-July to mid-December 1820 are missing from the parish records - so Johann's and Barbara's birth records could not be located (although their siblings' are all available). Together, Johann and Barbara had 7 children, of whom 6 survived into adulthood:

1846 - Johann GEORG (aka "George")

1848 - Friedrich (died in 1849)

1850 - Elisabetha (aka "Louise")

1853 - Margaretha

1857 - Barbara (remained in Germany)

1860 - Carl

1862 - Philipp

Five of their adult children (all except Barbara) emigrated to the United States, settling in the Detroit area. In 1891, several years after the death of his wife, Johann also emigrated to the United States, likely to be closer to his children.

Johann died on April 18, 1902 in Springwells Twp., Michigan (now southwestern Detroit) - the cause was listed as "old age and exhaustion". He was 81 1/2 years old. After his death, Johann was buried in the Jehle family plot in Woodmere Cemetery. His daughter Margaretha Birnbaum Jehle was interred between him and her husband Fidel Jehle after her death in 1928.

Of the 5 Birnbaum children that emigrated to the United States, the death dates and burial locations of all are known - with the exception of Louise. Louise's husband Friedrich Schauder died in 1900, and is buried in the German Lutheran (aka Trinity) Cemetery on Mt. Elliot Ave. in Detroit. Trinity Cemetery's records leave a lot to be desired, and I have not been able to determine if Louise is also buried there.
