Edwin Heacox Gets Forestry Award at ISC
Edwin Heacox arrived in Britt Wednesday morning from Tacoma, Wash., having come to Mason City via air. After a short visit at the parental Dr. F. E. Heacox home, he left Thursday for Ames to attend the Golden anniversary observance of the Forestry Department at the Iowa State College that marked fifty years of professional forestry education at the college.
Friday night a banquet ended the 2-day forestry meeting of the Iowa State Forestry programs of Iowa and the midwest that were outlined by speakers Friday afternoon.
The Des Moines Register Saturday morning carried an article from Ames on the anniversary and the naming of eight of the outstanding graduates in the field of forestry who were honored at the banquet. Edwin F. Heacox, managing forester for Weyerhauser Timber Company, of Tacoma, Wash., born in Britt, was one of the eight to receive the award for meritorious service. I. S. C. president James H. Hilton made the presentation of awards.
From Ames Mr. Heacox left for Pittsburgh, Pa., sent there by his company, for a two months special training course.

Obituary from the "News Tribune" of Tacoma, Washington dated 13 Sep 2005:
Edwin Heacox
Loving and selfless father, husband, brother and friend to all people he came into contact with, Ed passed away after ninety-nine years three months and five days of life, in comfort and peace, with the knowledge that all of his family could take care of themselves, on Friday evening September 9.
He was born in Britt, Iowa, on June 5, 1906, where he lived until he went to Iowa State University where he received a degree in forestry in 1930. He worked for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company from 1930 to 1968, providing overall guidance to forest management activities, retiring as vice president of the timberlands division. He taught graduate forestry students at the University of Washington until he retired again in 1972. He then worked for West Fork Timber Company and Murray Pacific Corporation for about 20 years before finally retiring for the third time in 1981.
During his long and extremely productive career he held numerous distinctions including being president and fellow of The Society of American Foresters, and he was appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to the National Agricultural Research Advisory Committee.
Ed was an avid tennis player, amateur Labrador retriever trainer, duck hunter, trap shooter, fisherman, private airplane pilot, and historian and he had an inquisitive attitude towards almost everything. He had a wonderful sense of humor, he was an excellent writer and he had a quick wit and intellect; and he got to know, like and be liked by those around him without apparent effort.
He is predeceased by his brother, Maynard, Chicago, IL, his first wife of seventeen years, Frieda Pahl, his second wife of thirty-eight years, Edna McKeever and by son Bill McKeever. He is survived by his sister, Martha Bergen, St. Paul, MN, daughters, Mary Heacox, Santa Fe, NM, Nancy Cheverez, Santa Barbara, CA, sons, Ed Heacox, San Jose, CA, Bob Heacox, Gig Harbor, eleven grand children, ten great-grand children and his loving companion, Doris Worthington, Hollister, CA.
Remembrances, in lieu of flowers, should be sent to the American Red Cross, Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund. His celebration of life service will be held at Haven of Rest, Gig Harbor, Hwy SR 16, 253-851-9991, Thursday, September 15, at 3:00 pm.
