American Folk Figure. She was the Madam of what was probably Washington D.C.'s most exclusive and highest price house of prostitution. Hall ran a house of prostitution on Maryland Ave 3 blocks from the Capitol building, catering to some of the nations most important men. An archaeological excavation of the site many years later, yielded Champagne corks, corset busks (metal stiffeners), and pieces of china. Only the finest of such establishments would serve Champagne. The artifacts of the excavation are in the Smithsonian. The house closed in 1878, with no known raids on the house, and apparently Mary Ann Hall was never arrested during the 4 decades the house was in operation.
