Lavina Lilley Holmes Jan. 17, 1923 - July 28, 2012

On July 28th our angel, surrounded by love, went home to heaven.

Lavina was born in Merced, CA to Clara and Harold Lilley. A brilliant student, she graduated from high school at 16 and attended Fresno State College and University of California, Berkeley. On a blind date, while at Fresno State, she met her future husband, a hot-shot WWII hero, Besby Frank Holmes. They were married in 1943. Lavina spent the next 25 years traveling the world with Frank and making a wonderful home for their four children. When they retired, they returned to their home in San Rafael, CA. Lavina was loved by all who knew her for her thoughtfulness, generosity, and spirit of fun. She was kindness, grace, and selflessness personified. She loved gardening and was masterful at it.

She was the consummate hostess, making everyone feel welcomed and appreciated. She was predeceased by her husband, Lt. Col. Besby Frank Holmes, brother Harold, and sisters Marion and Suzanne.

She leaves, to honor her memory, her children Diana of Fresno, CA, Frank of Petaluma, CA and Winthrop, MA, Katherine of Fairfax, VA, and Robert of St. Petersburg, FL, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, brother Hollis Lilley and his wife Ann, loving nieces and nephews, and caring friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in San Rafael, CA at 2:00PM Monday, August 6, 2012.
