Son of Herbert Sidney Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Black. Herbert and Elizabeth divorced when John was a toddler. Elizabeth then moved to Texas with her parents. John may have been told that his father had died, as Elizabeth and her parents told people in Paris that Elizabeth was a widow. John grew up in Paris, Texas in the home of his step-father, S. W. Wilbur. He graduated from Paris High School and Sewannee, University of the South in Tennessee. He was admitted to the US Naval Academy but left to pursue his business career. John worked first as a cotton broker in Texas and Oklahoma before joining the brokerage firm Zimmerman, Alderson and Carr. He worked from their Chicago office for ten years. In 1943, he moved to their office in Memphis, Tenn. where he was made partner.

John died of accidental drowning on a vacation visit to Sikeston. He was married at the time of his death. His only survivors included his wife, Katherine, his mother, and two step-sisters from Herbert's second marriage, Jeannette and Barbara who John never met or knew about.

Note: Although his obituary lists his birth year as 1902, the Iowa Births & Christenings Index lists his birth year as 1901.
