Katherine Knox was born on October 7, 1874 to Katherine Towle and John Knox in Cambridge, Mass. Her family moved to Boston's West End in the 1880s. Katherine (Kitty) worked as a seamstress and dressmaker.
Kitty was a bicycle racer. She became a member of the Riverside Cycling Club of Boston. This was one of the first groups of its kind for African-Africans. Kitty was the first African American to be accepted into the League of American Wheelman. (LAW). There were few female members. Kitty raced although she was denied entrance into some races, and service in hotels and restaurants because of her race.
She had to adapt her clothing and became known for her fashionable outfits.
Unfortunately, her life was cut short because of kidney disease. Kitty died on October 11. 1900.
