Second oldest of the five children of Helena Popovich and Adam Robert Kosut. His siblings included: Margaret Kosut, Annie Kosut Stefanick, Adam Robert Kosut, and Thomas W. Kosut.

In 1930, the family was living in Minersville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, where his father was working as a coal miner. The household included: his father, Adam Kosut, age 47, born in Czeckoslovia, married at age 29, naturalized in 1901, a miner; his mother, Helen, age 37, born in Czeckoslovia, married at age 19, naturalized in 1905; his sister, Margaret, age 16, born in Pennsylvania, a sewer in a shirt factory; Albert, age 14, born in Pennsylvania; his sister, Annie, age 12, born in Pennsylvania; his brother, Adam, age 10, born in Pennsylvania; and his brother, Thomas, age 3 8/12, born in Pennsylvania.

In April 1942, his father registered for the World War II draft. He was living at 332 Ilwellyn Road in Minersville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He was married to Helen Kosut and was working for the WPA in Cass Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He was observed as being 5'3" tall, 140 pounds, blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion.

Bert enlisted in the US Navy December 4, 1935, became an Electrician's Mate, served four years, and was mustered out on Treasure Island, San Francisco. During that time, he met and married Willma Jane Helton. They were married on June 29, 1938, in St Anthony's Church in Long Beach, California,

After completing his tour in the Navy, Bert joined the Merchant Marine. In 1945, he was a crew member on the Champ Clark, sailing from Balboa, Canal Zone, arriving at Seattle, Washington on June 11, 1945. He had been in the Merchant Marine for four years at that point and was to be discharged upon arrival.

He used the GI Bill to get his college education from the University of Southern California and subsequently went to work for General Electric as a nuclear engineer. He and Willma made their home in Riverside and San Jose, California for many years. They had four children: Janette, Bert Stephen Jr. (1943-1943), Gregory Bert (1953-1999), and Sally Sue. They would eventually have three grandchildren.

Bert died at age 77 on September 23, 1992 in San Jose, California (Santa Clara County) and was buried in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella Village, California (Merced County).

Bert Kosut was born in Hawk Run, PA 24 August 1915 and died 23 September 1992 in San Jose, CA. He was the son of Helena and Adam Kosut who immigrated in 1914 from Austria after emigrating from Czechoslovakia. He was raised in Minersville, PA where his father was a coal miner and mother tended to their five children, Margaret, Albert, Annie, Adam, Thomas. In school he played football and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

He joined the Navy in 1935 and served in the Pacific and later with the Merchant Marines. He mustered out in Long Beach, CA in 1939 and married Willma Jane Helton who had come to California from Wiley, Colorado to escape the Dust Bowl. They met at a dance. They honeymooned in San Francisco during the World's Fair. He attended the University of Southern California on the GI Bill graduating in 1947 studying Mechanical Engineering while working for the Southern California Gas Company in Compton. They made their home in South Gate (Hollydale, CA). He worked for Rocketdyne 1956 in Semi Valley, CA on the rocket stands, in 1957 he went to GE's Knolls Atomic Power Lab in Schenectady, NY as a Nuclear Engineer. He then transferred in 1959 with GE to Hanford Operations in Richland, Washington. In 1965 he transferred to GE's King of Prussia, PA office as a valve specialist. He transferred to GE's Nuclear Energy Department in San Jose, CA in 1967. He retired in 1987.

After retiring he and Willma Jane moved temporarily to San Bernardino, California restoring investment homes enjoying the challenge and change of scenery.
He loved the out-of-doors especially trout fishing and camping in Kings Canyon and Sequoia. He could name every tree, berry/nut and plant in the forest. He liked rifle shooting, playing a good game of bridge, dancing in the living room and going to a Sunday afternoon movie.

They raised three children: Janette Kosut, Atlantic Beach, Florida; Stephen Bert Kosut, deceased 1943; Gregory Bert Kosut, deceased in 1993, Yorba Linda, California; and Sally S. Kosut Davis, Placerville, California. His wife Willma Jane Kosut died in December 1999 in Placerville, California.
