Cornelius T. Fessenden's first wife died June 23, 1813 leaving him with five children ages twelve and under. Mary Hooker proved to be a beloved stepmother to these children as she was the namesake for several of her step-grandchildren. Her first husband, Cornelius died in 1820. She remarried, about 1834, to Edward D. Lake of Gorham, Ontario County, New York. It was also the second marriage for Edward Lake. Mary and Edward lived in Gorham until their deaths. In 1860 they were living with Edward's widowed son Denison and his children. After Edward's death, Mary continued to live in the home of her stepson, Denison Lake until her death.
