"ACCIDENT -
We learned from the Mechanicsburg Journal, that on Saturday evening the 21st Mr. Hyman Longnecker and his wife [Maltida], residing about four miles from own, who had driven in two-horse sleigh, started for home about half-past six 'clock, it being then quite dark, and snowing rapidly. At the South end of Market Street, the owner of a lot adjoining the street was quarrying stone, and he borough authorities also had workmen engaged in the same occupation, on the opposite side of the street, immediately adjoining the wagon track, the latter having made an excavation of about ten feet in depth, descending perpendicularly on one side. Arriving here, there being no guard, and the darkness and snow obscuring the place, the horses plunged headforemost into the hole, precipitating Mr. Longnecker clear beyond them while the sleigh was thrown upon the horses and Mrs. L. underneath them. Mr. L. through severely injured, was able to extricate his wife from her dangerous position, where she was lying completely insensible under one of the horses. They in the meanwhile remained perfectly quiet, until they were unhitched, and the sleigh taken off them, or Mrs. L. must inevitably have been killed, as they were freshly shod, and had they struggled, the consequences must have been fatal. She was taken to the house of Mr. Dulaney, residing near, and from thence to the Merchant's Hotel, and removed to her home the following day. We are happy to learn that her injuries are not serious."
