Helena Bache BLEECKER
Birth: 8 SEP 1796 in NY, NY
Death: 17 AUG 1821 in NY, NY
Burial: Bleecker Family Vault at Trinity Church graveyard, NY, NY

Note: From "The Duffie Family of Edinburgh and New York" by Patricia Ellerton Duffie, copyright 1983 - p107 - Helen was nineteen when she married Cornelius on April 16, 1816 at Trinity Epics opal Church. Their romantic love was rare and unexpected in marriages of thier day. Helen was CRD's best friend, his closest companion dn the center of his life. His love for Helen was apparent to all who knew him and his happiest years were those following his marriage. CRD's business often kept him away on long trips to Boston, Montreal, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Richmond. Each night, when the stagecoach stopped at an inn, he wrote a letter to Helen describing the people and new places he had seen that day. In her letters Helen called him "Rosevelt." She told him about the family life at home, her visits with friends and relatives and her loneliness. While they were separated, she counted the days until he would be home again. Their letters expressed spontaneous emotions in hasty, informal handwriting. Sometimes, in deep concentration, Helen wrote on without hearing the dinner bell. Later she found her family gone from the dining room and the food put away. In the fifth year of their marriage Helen bore her fourth child, a son named for his father. Eleven days later she was dead, probably from infection. She was only twenty-four. Helen was buried in the Bleecker family vault in Trinity churchyard And her husband was overcome by a melancholy sadness that never left him.
