David Allen Abel, 88, of Monongah, died on Sunday (Oct. 28, 2007) at his home.

He was born on March 10, 1919, in Taylor County, a son of the late Lida Jackson Abel and Dora Carter Abel.

Mr. Abel was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Metz for many years. He worked in several of the coal mines in the area. David retired from Sharon Steel in 1979. He was the owner and operator of Abel Salvage from 1972 to 1998. He loved his family and especially loved spending time with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Abel was awarded a commendation in 1959 from the Sheriff of Marion County for his part in saving many lives from carbon monoxide poisoning at the Davis Church of God of Prophecy on Jan. 1, 1959.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 65 years, Bernice June Furr Abel, who he married on Oct. 7, 1942; his two sons, Gary L. Abel and his wife Donna of Fairmont and David A. Abel and his wife Kim of Fairmont; his two daughters, Jean Garrison and her husband Jim of Ohio and Gloria J. Abel of Fairmont; his brother, John F. Abel of Clarksburg; his two sisters, Mona Catherine Abel of Fairmont and Mary Lee Abel of Grafton; his very special grandchildren, Denise A. Garrison Prysock of Ohio, James H. Garrison III of Ohio, Gary L. Abel Jr. of Fairmont, Rolna J. Wells of Enterprise, John W. Hawkins Jr. of Fairmont, Myria J. Copen of Fairmont, Cassandra N. Abel of Fairmont, David A. Abel III of Fairmont and Sean B. Abel of Fairmont; his great- grandchildren, Adrienne Prysock of Ohio, Amanda Prysock of Ohio, Marcie Jo O'Brian of Florida, Patrick Allen Wells of Enterprise, Emma Hawkins of Fairmont, Tristan Hawkins of Fairmont, Jamie L. Perrine of Fairmont, Jacob Allen Copen of Fairmont, Katelyn Allen and Christine Allen of Ohio; a nephew, George Abel of White Hall; his nieces, Susie Long of Helen's Run, Christina Wilson of Parkersburg and Mary Ann Delimpo of Fairmont; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brothers, James L. Abel, William A. Abel and Charles R. Abel.

Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont on Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Stan Lambert and the Rev. Carl Buckner officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Janes Memorial Cemetery.
