They had a child Oscar A. Mitchell on June 27, 1861. Hannah died soon after on August 17, 1861. Oscar also loses his father Sylvanus October 1, 1862. Sylvanus dies while in the line of duty as a Corporal in Co. E. 17th Regiment of Maine Volunteers at Fort Carroll in the District of Columbia when he contracted Typhoid Fever. Maria E. Mitchell of Yarmouth, becomes Guardian of their son Oscar.
