King Neptune was the US Navy's unofficial mascot for nine years. He helped raise over $19 million in war bonds during W.W.II (over $250 million when adjusted for today’s inflation) by being repeatedly "auctioned off" on fundraising tours. The 700 lb. porker would be dressed in a navy blue robe, a gold crown (made by a local Women's Club) and would wear silver earrings and painted toenails. King Neptune was born in a litter of 12 on the Sherman Boner farm near West Frankfort, Illinois. King Neptune died of pneumonia on Ernest Goddard's farm near Anna, Illinois on May 14, 1950, two days prior to his 8th birthday
How to find the grave, on northbound I-57, north of exit 31 (Anna). Grave is on the south end of the tree-filled plaza, just to the left of the truck parking lot. Like many of the roadside markers in southern Illinois it has been heavily vandalized over the years. Vandalism of King Neptune's gravestone prompted the Illinois Department of Transportation to build a new memorial to the patriotic porker at the Trail of Tears Welcome Center. Hopefully it will be safe from idiots (intellectually challenged) at this location.
