Alvis Braden was born in Tennessee but moved at an early age to Illinois with his parents, Alexander and Susannah Braden. He was married in 1852 to Ellen James. They had four children, Louisa (Edward) Brasell; Alvis; Elmira (William) Brasel; and Ira (Emeline). Ellen died in 1860.

Alvis enlisted in the 115th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. After serving nearly three years, he returned home and in 1874 he married Rachel (Wilday) Bolejack. They had two children, Charles Milton Braden and Bertha Louella (Frank) Brasel.

On March 25, 1879 Alvis died of an infection from the bite of a rabid dog and Rachel died of a heart attack. They were buried together in Newman Cemetery. She does not have a marker.
