Ray Anderson Clarke, 82, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013 in a local nursing home following a recent illness. A native of Salem, Ohio, he spent most of his formative years in Ohio and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was son of the late Roy Brownlee and Arletta L. Clarke.
He graduated high school in Oak Ridge, TN and received a B.S. in Business Administration from Bowling Green University, Ohio in 1952. As a member of Phi Kappa Tau, he served as national president of the fraternity from 1972-1975 and continued to be active in the Foundation thereafter.
Mr. Clarke served in the US Army and his business career was in human resources management with Owens-Illinois, Cutler Hammer, and Eaton Industries in the Midwest and South.
Moving to Asheville in 1991, he worked as a realtor for fifteen years with Coldwell Banker and Beverly Hanks. He was a lifelong Episcopalian and was most recently a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church. He was active in outreach activities and with non-profit community agencies in Asheville. He was a Mason and a member of the Asheville Men's Garden Club. He was devoted to travel across the world and over the years, visited 45 countries.
Survivors include a brother, Winston Bromley Clarke, Clearwater, FL; a niece, Terry Jean Rejko, Dunedin, FL; a nephew, James Bromley Clarke, of Tallahassee, FL; and a nephew, John Stephen Clarke, of Mechanicsburg, PA.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Trinity Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be provided to Trinity Episcopal Church, the Asheville Men's Garden Club, Loving Food Resources, and Homeward Bound of WNC.
