Charles (Karl) Hermann Streip, of German descent, was born in the village of Szpital, near Inowroclaw, Poland, then part of the Prussian Empire. He married Caroline Liedke there in 1874. He came with his wife and three young daughters to America in April of 1881, and settled in Rubicon, Huron County, Michigan, just before the great fire of that same year.

Charles was a bricklayer, stone mason, and farmer. He and his family were members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Port hope. Charles and Caroline were the parents of ten children: Emma Streip McClelland, Minnie Streip Briggs Sayles, Caroline Streip Lindow, George Streip, Ida Streip Steinbis, Otto Streip, Adolph Streip, Paul Streip, Fred Streip, and Albert Striep.
