He was born to Ansel and Sarah Carter George in Yancey County North Carolina. The family moved to Laurel County, Kentucky during the Civil War to escape the battles that were being fought nearby their home. Laurel County, Kentucky is where Henry met and married Lucinda B. Williams on 23 January 1867. Henry and Lucinda moved their family in a covered wagon from Kentucky to Blue Ridge, Collin County, Texas in the spring of 1879, and later to Sanger, Texas. The family lived and farmed along Duck Creek just west of Sanger, Texas and this is where Henry passed away from a chronic kidney disease.

Two of his Granddaughters, Bertha and Bertie George, who attended his funeral stated that he was "buried by the big tree in the front of the cemetery."
