Joe the son of Herman R. Barnes and Sallie E. Barnes of Brunson SC enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 1, 1963 in Macon GA. In Vietnam he was serving with Company D, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On February 25, on Operation Desoto in support of the 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, a Recon Patrol from the 1st platoon was inserted near Nui Cua, Hill 163 in the Duc Pho District of Quang Ngai Province. During the landing, the helicopter was taken under heavy enemy machine gun fire, as the men moving quickly to the edge of the LZ (Landing Zone) a BT (Booby Trap) was tripped causing an explosion. One Marine was wounded requiring evacuation and Sgt Barnes was killed instantly as a result of fragmentation wounds to his entire body.
