Charles Myers Strickland
March 25, 1940 - July 02, 2004

Charles Myers Strickland of Great Mills died on July 2, 2004 at the age of 64. He was born to Cecil and Helen Strickland on March 25, 1940 in the family home in Jarboesville, MD.

Myers spent his childhood with his brothers, Donald, Ronald, and Bruce, at the family farm on Strickland Road.

In addition to bailing hay, hanging tobacco, and raising livestock, he liked driving soapbox cars, and drag racing his Dodge ?Red Rocket?.

As a teenager, he met his perfect dancing partner, Dee Pettigrew; they were married on August 8, 1964.

Directly after graduating from Great Mills High School in 1958, Myers also known as ?Strick? began working at the Computer Sciences Directorate CSD on Naval Air Test Center. During these years at CSD, he spent his evenings earning his Bachelor?s of Science from University of Maryland and his Master?s of Science from Florida Institute of Technology. He also was active on the Board of Trustees at the Lexington Park United Methodist Church. He also served as a member of the cemetery committee for Ebenezer Cemetery.

Strick worked on the base until his retirement in 1996. After retirement from civil service, he worked as a program manager at Systems Integration and Research and General Scientific Corporations. During this time, he also became active in the Cancer Support Group at St. Mary?s Hospital. As a survivor of lung cancer in 1993, he was often called upon to be a speaker and act as an inspiration to others going through this difficult process.

Whereas others have hobbies like golf, Myers preferred to relax by creating things. A carpenter and a draftsman, he did everything from building bookshelves to stripping and refinishing antique furniture to designing his own home and putting up walls in his brothers and sons-in-laws houses. Because he loved creating these projects and was so gifted at it, many family members sought his advice and his hands-on assistance in these projects around their homes.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Andrew Szabo of Lexington Park, MD., Laurie and Steve Clark of Falls Church, VA., and Charlotte and Gary Utter of Stewartstown, PA.; grandchildren Austin and Aidan Clark and Ansley and Paige Utter. Myers is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Eleanor Strickland, Ronald and Karon Strickland, and Bruce and Sharon Strickland; 11 nieces and nephews and their spouses, and numerous beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dee Strickland, his parents, Cecil and Helen Strickland, his brother, Leonard Cecil, and his parents-in-law, Melvin and Carmen Pettigrew.

Friends may call on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD.
