Joseph Heflin was listed as age 14 on the 1880 Kansas federal census in McPherson County with his parents and three younger siblings. By 1900, the family was in Coffey County, Kansas and his mother was a widow. Joseph was listed as age 34.

Joseph H. Heflin enlisted in Co. E., 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry in June, 1898, during the Spanish-American War. Records show his death date and a military headstone. He had received a military pension. It has not been determined why he was not buried in the same cemetery as his wife.

Family information lists his wife as Emma Jane Goodall and their marriage in 1904.

Joseph H. Heflin was listed as age 44 on the 1910 California Township, Coffey County, Kansas, census. He was listed with his wife, Emma J., age 22, and his son Floyd A., age 2. In 1920, J. H. Heflin, wife Emma, Floyd A., age 11 & Bernice, age 5, were living in Carroll County, Arkansas.

Joe H., age 59 and wife Emma J., 36, were listed in Cimarron City, Gray County, Kansas on the 1925 state census. An infant named Jane Heflin is buried there who died in 1924. Floyd was 16; Bernice, 11; Mary, 3; and Howard, 1, on the 1925 census.

Joseph H. Heflin was listed as a widower on the 1930 California, Coffey, Kansas federal census with Floyd, Bernice, Mary, & Howard.

For whatever reason, Joseph was listed as Joseph L. Heflin as a child, but used the middle initial of "H." later.
