Martha Ross Miller, the eldest daughter of William and Maria Willis Ross, was born Jan 19, 1829, Adair county, Kentucky, being the oldest child of a family of nine children. She died Dec. 2, aged 71 years, 10 months and 22 days.
Two sisters Mrs. Frank Ernest of Farmingdale, and Mrs. Mary E. Goodman of Coquille, Oregon, and three brothers, Oliver and Scott Ross of Heyworth, Ill., and Alfred Ross of Clinton, Ill., are the only surviving members of her father's family. She with her parents emigrated to Illinois in 1837, and settled near the place where she has resided the greater part of her life. She was united in marriage in 1843 to Mathias Miller, who died in March 28, 1886.
To this union were born children, five of whom died while young. George William died while a member of the 114th Illinois volunteers in 1865; Alfred Franklin, Oct. 25, 1892, after a short illness. The daughters, Mrs. Sarah Gard, Mrs. Florence Campbell and Mrs, Virgie McGraugh, twenty-four grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of Mrs. Miller.
She was converted and became a member of the Methodist church while quite young and has always lived and acted out a true Christian life.
"Grandma," as she was familiarly called by a great many, was an indefatigable worker; always pleased when she was working to make her children and grandchildren happy, and always giving good advice regarding what she had seen was right during her life of usefulness on earth.
