Katherine was born on August 23, 1921 in Wisner, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Johanna Kyl. She graduated from Wayne College High School with the class of 1939. In 1942 she received her BS degree from Wayne State College, and in 1968 she received her master's degree from Iowa State University. Katherine taught in the public schools of Nebraska and Iowa for 42 years, retiring in 1987. Students at Rockwell City and Cedar Valley remember her fondly as a French and social studies teacher and as a high school counselor.
In 1949, Katherine was united in marriage to Karl F. Schwartz at Jackson, Minnesota, and the couple made their home in Rockwell City. Karl passed away in 1966. In 1970 Katherine married Dr. C.E. Treman, and he passed away in 1994.
Katherine is remembered for her dedication to the Calhoun County Historical Society. She devoted many of her retirement years to volunteering in the Calhoun County Museum, and she served for 10 years as its President of the Board.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Katherine was preceded in death by her siblings: Rudolf, Richard, Festa, George, Elizabeth, and John.
There will be no services. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City, with Palmer & Swank Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Calhoun County Historical Society in Katherine's name.
