Hyrum Ben was known as Benny to his family. He was the oldest son of Hyrum John Adams and Thelma Fern Cherry.

On January 30, 1940, a school bus dropped Ben off across the highway from his grandparents' house. While crossing the highway, Ben was struck by a loaded grain truck. On January 31, 1940, he died of injuries sustained in the accident. Funeral services were held February 3, 1940 after which he was laid to rest in the Grace Cemetery.
