Carolyn Herrmann was born Oct 4, 1917 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Frank W. Herrmann (1875 - 1949) and Helen E. Hill (1889 - 1967)

Carolyn entered the Sisters of Mercy from Sacred Heart Parish in 1933 and professed her perpetual vows in April 1939. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology from Mercyhurst College, her master's in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame.

Sister Carolyn taught in the Chemistry and Biology departments at Mercyhurst College (now Mercyhurst University) and chaired the Chemistry Department. She was the president of the college from 1963 to 1972 while concurrently superior general of the Sisters of Mercy in Erie, Pennsylvania.

During her tenure as President of Mercyhurst, the college doubled the size of its student body, opened enrollment to men after 43 years as a women's college, and oversaw the construction of Zurn Hall of Science and Fine Arts, Baldwin Residence Hall, Hammermill Library, the Tullio Athletic Field, eight student townhouses and three student apartment buildings. The student union on the Erie campus is named in her honor.

Sister Carolyn observed her Golden Jubilee in 1984 and her Diamond Jubilee in 1994.

Sister Carolyn died at age 79 at Saint Vincent Health Center. At the time of her death, she was in her 63rd year of religious life.
