Sarah J Collins was born in New York state in about 1858, daughter of John Collins & Elinor "Ellen" McVea, both of whom were born in Ireland. She was raised on the family farm, which was located on Lewiston Rd., Batavia, Genesee Co., New York. Her father served in the 129 N.Y. Infantry, which later became the 8th N.Y. Heavy Artillery, Union Army, during the Civil War.

On August 31, 1895, Sarah was committed to the Willard State Hospital aka Insane Asylum, were she was listed as a resident for the 1900 census. According to information obtained by her gg-niece, Janet Pouillon-Metzger, Sarah died at the Willard Asylum on September 4, 1904, her cause of death listed as epilepsy which she'd been afflicted with since infancy. Sarah was buried in the Willard Asylum Cemetery, in an unmarked grave.
