Mary was the mother of the following Balkam children: Edward Henry, Jane McLellan, Elizabeth Griffin, Frederick George and Horatio Balch.
"Mr. Balkam was born in Attleboro, Mass., Nov. 25, 1770, married Abigail Smith of Norton, Mass. April 22,1795 who was born June 29, 1771. Between the years 1800 and 1802 with his wife and three children he came to Plantation No. 4, Washington County, now Robbinston, where were born to him and his wife Abigail six children. She died October 24, 1822, and he remained a widower until September 13,1824 when he married Mary McLellan, of Portland who became mother of five children. Mr. Balkam's death took place in Robbinston, September 20, 1832, and that of his widow Mary at Milltown, N.B. on November 9, 1866 at the age of 78 years"
He built a fine residence at Robbinston, which was his home and that of his family for many years. It has since been destroyed by fire. In it was the first piano ever brought into the town, and the playing of Mrs. Mary Balkam upon it was the delight of the children who visited there.(Maine Historical Magazine Volume 3)
