Behrendt was an insurance executive and pioneer of the film industry. He had earlier worked in movies, helping producers get work and help them obtain bank loans. People he helped were Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn and several other big names. He was a stockholder in Principal Pictures and several of Sol Lesser's screen ventures. He died at his home following a year's illness.
