Joyce's first "marriage" was at the age of 16 to one of the many illegitimate sons of Venezuelan dictator Juan Vicente Gomez (1857-1935), who never married but fathered between 80-100 children. Pushed into the marriage by her controlling stage mother, the huge wedding with 800 guests took place at the Waldorf Astoria. When Joyce was finally told who her late father-in-law really was and about his savage "reign of terror," she had her marriage annulled after only two weeks.
