Lena M. Carter, 92, formerly of Murphysboro, passed away at 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 in Friendship Manor Health Center in Nashville. Services were Monday, Feb. 7, in Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Timothy Mueller officiating. Burial was in Murdale Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to Trinity, St. John's Lutheran School in Nashville or Alzheimer's Association. Lena was born July 26, 1918 in Pomona to Grover Cleveland Hickam and Effie Mae (Hoover) Hickam.
She had worked as a department head at the former Ben Franklin in Carbondale for 18 years, for the formerLee's Variety Store for three years and had previously worked for The Glove Factory. She was a member of Retail Clerk's Union. Mrs. Carter was a member of University Baptist Church in Carbondale.
She was married to Nelson Tilman Leslie, and they had four children of which three survive. Survivors include,10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister, both of Murphysboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren Melvin Carter, on Aug. 1, 2010, one son, Ronald Leslie, two grandchildren, two sisters and seven brothers.
