From the Vicksburg Herald, March 29, 1868, p. 2:

The many warm friends of Capt. Wm. Swann Yerger will be pained to learn of his death at his home in Yazoo county. It would be a work of supererogation for us to say anything in eulogy of him, either as a friend, gentleman or soldier. He has gone to that “bivouac of the dead,” to which many of his comrades have preceded him, and whither the rest are swiftly following. We drop a tear to his memory, and express our most sincere condolence to his bereaved family and his large circle of friends.
Since writing the above we have received from a lady friend of the deceased the following touching tribute of respect to the memory of deceased:

Capt. Wm. S. Yerger, the second son of the late Hon. Geo. S. Yerger, died at his plantation, in Yazoo county, on the 17th inst., in his thirty-fourth year. No man who has lived or died is better entitled to have inscribed upon his tomb:
“Here lies a man without fear,
A gentleman without reproach.”

Descended from a family whose intellectual achievements are blended with the history of the State, he was a bright jewel in its crown, and no man more fully enjoyed the admiration and respect of his friends than did this much lamented, chivalrous and noble gentleman.

During his brief career as a lawyer and as a representative in the Senate of Mississippi, he commanded the highest respect of the bar and the people. A true type of his great and good ancestor, he has gone down to his grave beloved and honored; and his memory will not die so long as true manhood is revered by his countrymen. . . .
