Anchorage Daily News August 19, 2000 Longtime Alaska resident REX C. POE SR., 77, died Aug. 16, 2000, at Elmendorf Hospital from lung cancer. A graveside service with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Mr. Poe was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Marian, Ind. He graduated from high school and enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 21, 1940. He served as a sergeant and received the American Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal and Gold Conduct Medal. Mr. Poe moved to Alaska in 1940 and received his honorable discharge Dec. 15, 1944. Mr. Poe lived in Seward, King Cove for more than 20 years, and in Anchorage for more than 20 years. Mr. Poe was a fisherman and bartender. He retired from bartending in King Cove in 1985 and enjoyed gardening and building things. His family said: ''Rex will be missed dearly by his wife, Nida, and her children, Dorothy, Alma, Allen, Alvin and Viola. All of his loving children, Jr., Mike, Ricky, Merry and Bobby will miss their beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very proud of his military service. He was a good provider and a proud father. He touched many hearts. He expressed much kindness and love for his sisters and brothers, Roger, LaVonne, Cecelia, Mary Ellen, Lee and Lynn.'' Mr. Poe is survived by his wife, Nida M. Poe of Anchorage; sons, Rex Poe Jr. of Adak, Mike Poe and Ricky Poe, both of Anchorage; daughter, Merry Poe of Boston, and son, Robert Poe of Fairbanks; brothers and sisters, Roger W. Poe Jr. of Randle, Wash., LaVonne Kingsbury of Kelso, Wash., Cecelia Elmore of Salem, Ore., Mary Ellen Hastings of Fairbanks, Lee Poe of Clatskanie, Ore., and Lynn Poe of Rimrock, Ariz.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
