A 1953 Graduate of Hillside High School, Patrolman Lordi was a long time member of the Hillside Police Department when he was shot and killed in the line of duty while working a uniformed special assignment at a local Gino's fast food restaurant. Three suspects entered the restaurant to rob it and one of them approached Patrolman Lordi and asked him for the time. When Patrolman Lordi raised his arm to look at his watch the suspect pulled out a handgun and attempted to disarm him.

A struggle ensued in which Patrolman Lordi was shot and killed.

The three suspects fled without completing the robbery but were apprehended several days later. They were sentenced to prison terms with the shooter receiving a life sentence.

Patrolman Anthony Lordi's name is forever enshrined on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C..

Patrolman Lordi was survived by his wife Geraldine(dec.May 2004) and three children; Cindy Lordi-Parlavecchio, Gregory and Capt. Jeffery-HPD(dec. Aug 2004).

Lordi was the first — and to date, only — Hillside police officer murdered in the line of duty. On Sunday, December 13, 2009, days before the 30th anniversary of his death, Hillside police and members of the county prosecutor's and sheriff's office commemorated his sacrifice by dedicating a memorial in his honor outside Hillside Police Headquarters.
