Born in Llanfyllin, Montgomershire, Wales, John was the son of John E. & May Evans. After his mother's death his father remarried, to Jane Ellis and the family immigrated to America, departing from Liverpool, England on Jan 30 and arriving at Ellis Island, NY, on Feb 8, 1907. In addition to his parents, his brother David T. and his half siblings Edward, Mary, Maldwyn & Christmas came as well.

Upon arrival at Ellis Island there was a brief time that it was thought that John & David would be returned to Wales (both deemed "slow") but ultimately they were allowed to remain. The family settled briefly in Ohio before moving to the Steuben area, Oneida Co. NY. John was a farmer for most of his life, he never married.
