Billie was born April 5, 1928 in Princeton, Ind., one of two children of Gus and Pearl Zimmerman Byrd. His younger brother James Wallace "Jimmie" Byrd died in 1927, from a accidental death at the Byrd Home. The Byrd family moved to Moline, Illinois shortly after the tragic death. Billie graduated from Moline High School, and received his B.A, degree in accounting from St. Ambrose College, Davenport. He earned his teaching certificate from Knox College, Galesburg.
Byrd had been employed by the Illinois State Revenue Department all of his life with the exception of service with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was aboard the USS Macon.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Hagberg - Hamlin Post 45, American Legion, both of Galva.
Byrd married the beautiful Nancy M. Smith on April 18, 1953 in st. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan.
His wife of 26 happily spent years Nancy survives, among with two sons Marcus of Galva, and Michael, and a daughter Kathy, both of home, and his beloved mother Pearl Byrd, also of Galva.
He was preceded in death by his father and brother. May their souls rest in peace.
Service were held at 10a.m. on Monday, July 16, in St. John's Catholic Church, Galva, with the Rev. Donnelly J. Fitzpatrick officiating, assisted by Robert J. Smith, deacon.
Interment will be in Galva Cemetery.
Visitation was 4-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, at the Johnson-Gill-Schuster Chapel, where a vigil service will be at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to St. John's Catholic Church or Pope John XXIII National Seminary Library Fund.
