Enlisted as Private CO H 6th Regiment MI Heavy Artillery Rank Out as Sergeant

At the outbreak of the Civil War Cornelius promptly tendered his service enlisting in CO H 6th MI Heavy Artillery. He served until the close of the war Mustered out and honorably discharged 5 Sept 1865. His command was in the extreme south during practically the entire war, taking part in the Battle of Baton Rouge and the siege of New Orleans. In Baton Rouge he was shot in the neck and was incapacitated for duty for 3 months, he consented to stay in hospital for only 2 weeks, preferring to remain with his regiment. Was a State Census enumerator 1880, 1884, 1900. Served 20 years as Justice of the Peace, retired in 1902. Was a Commander of the Dwight Post No. 163 Grand Army of the Republic, in Vermontville for 7 years.
