E. E. Bitzer, Merchant, Dies Suddenly Today, Succumbs at Age of 41; Funeral Will Be Held Friday Afternoon
Earle E. Bitzer, for 17 years a merchant in the downtown district, died suddenly this morning of a heart attack.
Death came to Mr. Bitzer at 7:15 a.m. as he ate breakfast in Pelat's Restaurant on Main St. He was taken to Lake County Memorial Hospital by City Police Officer John Barstow. He was pronounced dead by a physician upon his arrival at the hospital.
Mr. Bitzer, who was 41, had for 11 years actively managed and operated the Bitzer Furniture Company at 19 S. St. Clair St., where 17 years ago he had started in business with his father, the late Baldwin B. Bitzer.
Born in Napoleon, O., Mr. Bitzer was married in June of 1913 to Miss Irene Todd at St. Mary's, O. He moved from St. Mary's in 1915. Upon his arrival here he had become associated with his father in business. It was 11 years ago this fall, upon the death of his father, that Mr. Bitzer assumed management of the store. Mr. Bitzer lived at 120 Levan Drive with his wife and two children.
Mr. Bitzer was a thirty-second degree Mason and was affiliated with the B. P. O. Elks, the Better Business Board and the First Church, Congregational.
Mr. Bitzer took great pride in his community and in the business district of Painesville, As a member of the Better Business Board, he was active on many committees and served as director of the organization.
His quiet, unassuming manner and enthusiasm in carrying out committee tasks assigned to him caused him to be greatly respected and admired by is fellow businessmen. His unfailing courtesy and sense of fair dealing won the confidence of the store's patrons.
In fraternal circles, while Mr. Bitzer never took an intensely active part, he could always be depended upon for constructive service. His affiliations were sources of pride to him.
Mr. Bitzer was a great home-lover and his greatest delight was to spend as much time as possible with his family. Motoring, camping or enjoying many outdoor activities with his son also gave him pleasure.
His passing came as a distinct shock to his family and to his many friends. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Irene Todd Bitzer; his son, Earle, Jr.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth; his mother, Mrs. B. B. Bitzer; and one sister, Agnes Bitzer.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the home, 120 Levan Drive, with the Rev. Willis A. Warren, pastor of the First Church, Congregational, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
