William Earl Hunter, US Navy retired Master Chief Gunners Mate, 74, of London Road died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Bill was born July 3, 1929 in Kershaw, S.C. to William E. and Ruth (Roberts) Hunter. He attended Mt. Pisgah High School in Kershaw. He joined the US Army near the end of World War II, and then joined the US Navy serving in both Korea and Vietnam. After his retirement from the Navy, Bill and his family resided in Kershaw, S.C, Hibbing, Minn., and the Twin Cities, where he went to work for FMC Corp's Naval Systems Division, traveling throughout the country. Bill moved to Duluth in 1988. Bill was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Franklinton, N.C. He married Renee Gais on Jan. 18, 2000. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jack; his sister, Annette and his first wife, Lois who died in 1988. Bill is survived by his wife, Renee; son, Billy (Shelly) Hunter of Isanti, Minn; daughters, Robin (Gerald) Greiner of Kershaw, S.C., Wendy (Daryl) Dunham and Toni (Roy) Christensen both of Duluth and Tracy (Chris) Malkovich of Nekoosa, Wis.; brothers, Rev. Carl (Rilda) Hunter of Franklinton, N.C., Ira B. (Pat) Hunter, James R. 'Bobby' Hunter and Thomas (Gail) Hunter all of Kershaw, S.C.; sisters, Barbara (T.C.) Carnes of Lancaster, S.C., Almetta Estridge and Pauline Taylor of Kershaw and Sue (Doug) Humphries of Lancaster, S.C.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. VISITATION:10 a.m. with Services at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard at Park Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. 2nd St.
