A.J. Bittenbender, aged 66, of 126 West Second street, well known local grocer, died yesterday at 8:40 am at the State Hospital, where he underwent an operation for amputation of his left leg Saturday. He was ill four weeks before admission to the hospital last Friday. Gangrene developed from a diabetic condition. He was born in Sugarloaf and resided in this city the last forty-eight years. Mr. Bittenbender was in the grocery business here with his brother, Charles Bittenbender the last forty-five years. He was a member of Emmanuel's Reformed church and the Knight of Pythias.
Surviving him is his wife, who before marriage was Lilly B. Singley, his aged mother, Mrs. Rachael Bittenbender of this city; two sons Kenneth and Albert and four brothers, Charles, William, George and Harry Bittenbender, all of this city.
