John was born 22 June 1871 in Canton, Stark, Ohio, the second of six children of William Jennings Melcher and Mary Ella Stover. He lived in Canton his whole life. He was a machinist by occupation. He married Minnie F. Jolly 23 May 1894 in Canton, Stark, Ohio. Minnie was born in November 1875 in Ohio, the daughter of Daniel G. Jolly (1852-1951) and Caroline Snelbaker (1853-1941). She had four siblings: Maude (1878-1951), Howard Charles (1880-1966), Bessie (1884-1945), and Eva Blanch (1891-1975). John and Minnie had at least four, possibly five children: Olive Minnie, Mary E.(?), Homer J., Beatrice Ruth, and an infant son, who was born and died sometime between June and December 1900. Their son Homer was born in November 1896 and lived only 10 months. Only Olive and Beatrice lived to adulthood.

John's wife Minnie died in October 1903 in Canton. Sometime after Minnie's death, John's daughter Olive Minnie went to live with her mother's sister, and his youngest daughter Beatrice Ruth went to live with her paternal grandmother. John never remarried, but did get involved with a married woman. John tried to end the relationship in 1917; he and the woman argued and John ended up shooting and killing her. He was sent to prison in Canton and presumably died there on 2 December 1917.
