Bessie Wood was born Bessie Hartnell, 01 Jan 1869 in Owermoigne, Dorset, England, the fifth of eight children of John Cox Hartnell and Elizabeth (nee Harding) Hartnell. Her parents brought their children to the United States in 1873, landing in Quebec, and entering the US at the Port of Detroit. The family settled first in the city of Kenosha, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, and moved to Salem Township about six months later. Her father, a carpenter by trade, built a home for the family just north of Brass Ball Corner in Salem Township where the family resided until the children were married or had moved, at which time they moved to the village of Salem. Bessie married William S. Wood 18 Apr 1896 at the Salem (Salem and Wilmot) Methodist Episcopal Church. William and Bessie had two sons, Wallace Wood, born 03 Aug 1898 in Salem, died 16 Mar 1983 in Clark County, Wisconsin; and Boy, born 04 Nov 1900 in Salems; died 12 Nov 1928 in Chippewa Falls, Chippewa County, Wisconsin.
